Avalanche Rescue Dogs

Get a look at how avalanche rescue dogs are trained.

One of the perks of the DAP is that we can be talking about research papers one minute and watching puppies play and learn the next!

The DAP research program wants to follow dogs all across America - young or old, large or small, city dogs or country dogs - we love them all and every dog has something special to teach us about healthy aging. But working dogs always take a special place in our imagination. Their skill shows the special bond between humans and dogs, but it doesn’t always come easy.

This month, Dr. Amber Keyser spoke with author Elizabeth Rusch about avalanche rescue dogs. Liz wrote a children’s book called Avalanche Dog Heroes following the training of a Border Collie puppy at a ski resort outside of Seattle, Washington.

A huge thank you to Elizabeth Rusch and Dr. Amber Keyser for sharing their knowledge and experience with Avalanche Dogs. That was super insightful and fascinating! I personally didn't know that this program/profession existed. So, I know I learned something new today.

To all the avalanche dogs and handlers out there - thank you for doing the work you do and making a difference!
